Top 5 National Day songs of all time
You may be unhappy with Singapore due to the large number of ERPs, inflation or the influx of immigrants. However, you cannot deny the fact that all Singaporeans still come together during National Day because this is still a place we call HOME.
When I was a kid, I would stay at home on the 9 August just to catch the live telecast of the NDP live show. The highlight for me would always be the annual National Day songs and the fireworks. NDP celebration in school is always fun as all of us get together in red to sing songs that everyone can relate to.
It has been awhile since we had a National Day song that everyone can remembers after a few years down the road. Yes, some of them may be nice but they are forgettable. I wonder if it is the publicity or that schools today still refuse to play the new songs since the older ones are considered to be a more popular choice. To exacerbate the situation, last year's song 'One Singapore' has got almost 3,000 dislikes. It received many complaints saying it is unbearable. I got to admit that the rapping part was really redundant and lame.
I feel that it's a pity the committee decided not to have a theme song this year as Singapore really has talented songwriters that are able to come up with nice theme songs although it might not be as successful as before. Personally, I feel that a good NDP song should be about dreams and about how Singaporeans can stand by and support each other through thick and thin despite the midst of social-cultural changes that we are facing. The MV of the song is also another instrumental factor that producers should take note of.
Here are my top 5 National Day songs of all time! Tell me what's your favorite too!
5. There's No Place I Rather Be (2007) by Kit Chan
This song is really special to me. It may be due to the fact that I was involved in that year's NDP. But I believe many people that are abroad would be able to resonate well with the lyrics of the song. Travelling may be fun. You may like the food in Taiwan, Sakura in Japan, the Eiffel Tower or Kimchi. But there's only one place where your family and friends are at and also not to forget your favourite Char Kway Teow, Satay and Hokkien Mee.
4.Reach out for the Skies (2005) by Rui En and Taufik Batisah
This ought to be one of the more refreshing song and duet! I remember myself doing the dance with my friends back in 2005! NDP song should be vibrant and fun!
This is one of the BEST NDP songs in my opinion. Till today, you can still see Taufik and Rui En performing this tract in various locations during National Day.
3. Count on me Singapore (1986)
Old but Gold. This is one song that you would hear every single year be it in school or even during NDP. Although this song was penned way before I was born, those of my generation and even those younger than me can still sing it! What more can we ask for?!
2. We Will Get There (2002) by Stephanie Sun
Love the voice, the tune and the lyrics.
"Look where we are, we've come so far" A song about belief and how we struggled through the darkest storm to reach where we are today. From a fishing village to a first world country. One other reason why this song is successful is because Stephanie sang it so well!
1. Home (1998) by Kit Chan
Doubt anyone will disagree with me. Together with Dick Lee, Kit Chan managed to put this song right through the hearts of all Singaporeans. The lyrics are meaningful and this is ONE song that everyone can sing from the beginning to the end. I even sang this during my route march when I was in BMT! This shows how much this song means to every Singaporean (son).
16 years but still going STRONG.
HAPPY 49TH BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!
