 WONGA MANIA!!


I was recently invited over to WongaMania Preview Session held at Cafe Pal. WONGA MANIA is a fast paced card game that captures the exhilarating experience of the financial markets. Fret not, you need not know anything about finance or the economy in order to play this game. MONGA actually means money in case you are wondering.



WONGAMANIA is designed by independent studio Capital Gains LLP and is the first financial card game in the world that is based on modern economics.

As I am doing Economics as my major, I am quite familiar with recession and growth (helps me a little). However, this game also taught me other macro economic events like stock bubbles and property crashes. It is instrumental to strategize/form ally in order to win this game. And trust me, it's really fun (continue reading and you will know why!)


WONGAMANIA comes with 143 cards with 53 unique designed artwork and interactive content that makes learning about economics, assets and taxes fun and less mundane. How I wish my economics classes in university is as interactive and fun! This game is suitable for those aged 8 and above and best played between 2 to 6 people.


AND GUESS WHO I SAW THAT DAY!? YES YEE CHUANG! She's used to be my college friend and now, she's teaching me how to play this card game! Such a a coincidence!


So how do you play this game? There are basically 4 stages in an economical cycle (Recovery, Growth, Stagnant and Recession). In order to win the game, players must rely on investment to generate extra income and to collect dividends by either buying low or selling high. Of course if you are familiar with the economy, you will know that the BEST time to buy stocks and properties will be during the recession and recovery phase. It will be so much more expensive when you buy at Growth stage. Calculate your opportunity cost and you will know that you are actually making the wrong move and your returns will not be as high. 

YOU ARE NOT MAXIMIZING YOUR UTILITY!!


These are some examples of stock/ bond and property cards. Bond cards are always the safest as they are less risky but of course, their returns are not as high. No risk, No gain.

It would be so boring if there are only cards like stock/ property / bonds. WONGA MANIA also has Global Cards which will move the economic cycle in a different direction! There are many times when I thought I'm winning but in the end I'm losing money because if this! So it's important you don't be overly optimistic and keep buying stocks as you won't know what would happen! There are also other incident cards in the pile for you to SABO your fellow friends. 


 Collect 3 Trust Fun and you win the game. Each Trust Fund cost you 8 Wonga. Trust me, it's not easy at all to collect 3 Trust Funds!

You may ask what is the inspiration behind WONGAMANIA. The simple truth to successful investing is  - Economics and Investment psychology are the foundation of any successful investors. However, mastering these 2 fields are a hassle. Trust me, I'm doing economics right now and it is really really hard. You just see graphs, differentiation, equations, graphs ......

Thus, the best way to learn all these is through a fun and interactive manner!

 Honestly, I feel that this is much better than many other card games. As interactive as this game may be, it requires you to strategise, think and also learn at the same time. How AWESOME?!
